The published Tricon documentation identifies the 3603E as a TMR digital output module with nominal 120 VDC operation, 16 commoned outputs, 90–150 VDC operating range, 0.8 A maximum per output, and 1,500 VDC minimum point isolation.
Product Introduction
The Triconex 3603E is a 16-point Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) digital output module used in Tricon safety systems. It is designed for 120 VDC field loads and provides the fault monitoring and diagnostic functions expected from a Tricon safety I/O module. The outputs are commoned, which is an important distinction from the 3603B, whose outputs are non-commoned.
The module sources current to field devices, so field power must be wired through the appropriate field termination assembly. Tricon documentation also identifies hot-spare capability and mechanical keying, allowing online replacement within a properly configured Tricon architecture.

Engineering Pain Point
The 3603E is often mistaken for a conventional 120 VDC digital-output card. That misses the important part of the design: the module participates in the Tricon TMR safety architecture and continuously performs output diagnostics. A problem in a field load, fuse, wiring path, or output channel can therefore generate diagnostic indications without necessarily meaning that the entire module has failed.
Typical Applications
- Safety shutdown systems — control of 120 VDC field devices within Tricon safety architectures.
- Solenoid valve control — suitable where the connected load falls within the 0.8 A/point rating.
- Trip and shutdown circuits — discrete actuation of safety-related field equipment.
- Relay and contactor control — provided the load, leakage, wiring, and field termination arrangement meet the module requirements.
Technical Pitfalls to Avoid
- Do not confuse 3603E with 3603B.
The 3603E has 16 commoned outputs, while 3603B has 16 non-commoned outputs. They should not be mixed in the same logical slot. - Do not treat 120 VDC as the exact operating range.
The specified range is 90–150 VDC, with 160 VDC listed as the maximum voltage. Check the actual field supply before commissioning. - Check the field termination assembly.
The 3603E uses an external termination arrangement, with one 1 A fast-acting fuse per output. A blown termination fuse can create a LOAD/FUSE indication that may initially look like an I/O-module fault. - Check the connected load characteristics.
Maximum current is 0.8 A per point, but inductive loads, cable resistance, leakage current, and output voltage drop all affect actual field performance. - Pay attention to long field wiring.
Tricon documentation specifically recommends compatibility testing for 3603E/3603T applications involving field wiring longer than 328 ft (100 m), non-twisted-pair cable, or atypical loads such as smart devices, strobes, and klaxons. - Do not assume a 3603T is an automatic replacement.
The 3603T has higher documented point isolation than the 3603E—2,500 VDC versus 1,500 VDC—and Tricon treats the variants separately. Application validation is still required.
Related Products
- Triconex 3603B — 120 VDC TMR digital output module with non-commoned outputs; not interchangeable with the 3603E simply because both operate in the 120 VDC class.

- Triconex 3601E — 115 VAC TMR digital output module; intended for AC rather than the 3603E’s 120 VDC field circuits.

- Triconex 3604E — 24 VDC TMR digital output module; different field-voltage class and current specifications.

Procurement Note
For a Triconex 3603E replacement, verify the complete module marking, Tricon chassis generation, logical slot configuration, field termination assembly, output commoning arrangement, and application load.
The most important distinction is between 3603E, 3603B, and 3603T. The Tricon documentation explicitly cautions against mixing these models in the same logical slot.
For a safety-system replacement, I would also record the existing module revision, system firmware/version, termination panel type, and field wiring configuration before installing the spare. A matching 3603E hardware label does not by itself prove that the complete I/O assembly is correctly configured for the installed safety application.
