The Emerson specification identifies the A6500-UM as a two-channel universal measurement card for the AMS 6500 ATG machinery protection system. Its two inputs can operate independently or be combined for measurement functions such as shaft vibration, shaft position, absolute shaft vibration, and other rotating-equipment measurements.
The card supports several sensor technologies rather than being limited to one vibration measurement chain. Emerson specifies eddy-current, piezoelectric, seismic, low-frequency, Hall-effect, and LVDT-related inputs, with the appropriate sensor interface and configuration required for each application.

A6500-UM
Product Introduction
The Emerson A6500-UM is the universal measurement card used in the AMS 6500 ATG machinery protection system. It is designed for monitoring critical rotating machinery and can process two measurement channels either independently or as a combined measurement. Typical measurements include relative shaft vibration, absolute bearing vibration, shaft position, eccentricity, thrust or rod position, speed, key signals, and related machinery condition parameters.
The card is installed in an A6500-SR system rack and communicates internally through RS-485 with the -CC communication card. The communication card provides Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP/IP connectivity to higher-level monitoring systems, while the -UM also provides 0/4–20 mA measurement outputs. Emerson describes the module as API 670 compliant and suitable for hot-swappable machinery protection applications.
Application Scenarios & Field Pitfalls — The Engineer’s Perspective
Engineering Pain Point
The main engineering issue with an A6500-UM replacement is that the card is highly configuration-dependent. Two cards with the same model number can be used for very different measurements depending on sensor type, measurement mode, scaling, alarm limits, filters, key-phase configuration, and output assignments. Replacing the hardware without preserving the original configuration can therefore produce a functioning card with incorrect measurement behavior.
Typical Applications
- Turbine and compressor protection using eddy-current probes for relative shaft vibration and shaft position.
- Bearing vibration monitoring using seismic or piezoelectric sensors.
- Shaft eccentricity, thrust, rod-position, and expansion monitoring on critical rotating machinery.
- Speed and key-phase measurement for machinery protection and order-analysis functions.
Technical Pitfalls to Avoid
- Do not trhe as a generic vibration input card. Sensor type and electrical interface are configurable. An eddy-current probe chain has very different input requirements from a piezoelectric or seismic sensor.
- Check the complete sensor chain. Emerson documents compatibility with sensor/converter combinations including PR6422, PR6423, PR6424, PR6425 and associated CON-series converters for eddy-current measurements. The probe, extension cable, converter, and measurement card should be considered as one chain.
- Preserve the original configuration. Measurement range, engineering units, signal evaluation, filters, alarm thresholds, hysteresis, current-output assignment, and key-signal settings can all affect the final protection behavior. The operating manual provides separate configuration procedures for different measurement modes.
- Do not confuse measurement channels with digital I/O. The two primary sensor channels are independent or combinable measurement inputs; the card also has five digital inputs and six digital outputs for associated control and protection functions.
- Check rack cooling. Emerson specifies -20°C to +70°C with forced cooling, but only -20°C to +55°C without forced cooling. Cabinet airflow and rack fan condition should therefore be checked during replacement.
- Verify the -CC communication path.he does not function as an isolated Modbus TCP/IP interface. Measurement data is transferred over the internal RS-485 bus to t500-CC communication card, which provides the external Modbus interfaces.

Procurement and Replacement Note
For an replacement, verify the complete card identification, -SR rack position, firmware/configuration, sensor type, converter model, channel application, alarm settings, current-output assignment, and -CC communication architecture.
The card itself is only one part of the machinery-protection measurement chain. Before removing a functioning unit, capture the existing configuration and document each sensor channel. For a failed card, compare the replacement’s hardware identification and configuration before returning the machinery to service.
One useful distinction during procurement is that is a universal measurement card, notA6500 communication card. The measurement card performs signal acquisition and evaluation; provides the external Modbus communication path.
