NI’s own documentation identifies the NI-9505 as a Full H-Bridge Brushed DC Servo C Series Motor Drive Module, with an integrated encoder interface and current sensor. It can directly control fractional-horsepower brushed DC servo motors and other actuators such as relays, lamps, solenoids, and valves.

The motor-current capability is temperature dependent. NI specifies up to 5 A at 40°C with the standard terminal accessory and 7.3 A at 40°C when using the NI-9931 screw-terminal accessory; at 70°C, the maximum is 1 A.

Product Introduction

The NI NI-9505 is a C Series motor-drive module designed for closed-loop control of brushed DC servo motors. Its full H-bridge can source current in both directions, while the integrated current sensor provides motor-current feedback and the encoder interface supplies position or speed information to the control application.

The NI NI-9505 is intended to operate as part of a CompactRIO-based control system rather than as a standalone motor controller. The module relies on the host controller’s FPGA architecture for application-specific control, which makes the chassis, controller, LabVIEW/FPGA application, motor supply, encoder, and module firmware/software compatibility important during replacement.

Application Scenarios & Field Pitfalls — Engineer’s Perspective

Engineering Pain Point

The common mistake is to evaluate the NI-9505 only by its motor-current rating. Its actual operating envelope is affected by ambient temperature, terminal accessory, motor supply, regeneration, encoder wiring, and the control algorithm implemented in the CompactRIO FPGA.

Typical Applications

  • Brushed DC servo positioning — Closed-loop position and velocity control for fractional-horsepower motors.
  • Laboratory and machine automation — FPGA-controlled motion where deterministic current and encoder acquisition are required.
  • Actuator control — Direct control of suitable DC motors, solenoids, valves, and other bidirectional loads.
  • CompactRIO motion systems — C Series motor-control applications requiring custom FPGA-based control.

Technical Pitfalls to Avoid

  1. Do not treat the NI-9505 as a generic digital-output card. It is a dedicated motor-drive module with a full H-bridge, current sensor, and encoder interface. NI’s current compatibility table specifically categorizes it under Motor Drive Module — Full H-Bridge Brushed.
  2. Respect thermal derating. The nominal current figure is not a universal continuous-current rating. NI documents 5 A at 40°C with the standard terminal, 7.3 A at 40°C with NI-9931, and only 1 A at 70°C.
  3. Check regeneration during deceleration. A high-inertia load can return energy to the motor bus during rapid deceleration, increasing bus voltage and potentially causing the drive or power supply to shut down or suffer damage. NI specifically documents regeneration as a design consideration for the 9505.
  4. Verify encoder wiring. The encoder interface is part of the module’s closed-loop architecture. Confirm A/B/Index wiring, signal levels, encoder supply, grounding, and cable arrangement before commissioning.
  5. Do not assume current CompactRIO compatibility from the C Series form factor alone. NI’s compatibility documentation shows the NI-9505 as a C Series motor-drive module, but individual chassis/controller and software combinations still need to be checked.

Procurement Note

The NI-9505 is discontinued, so replacement procurement should start with the existing system configuration rather than searching for a generic “C Series motor module.” NI’s own product page confirms that the item is no longer available.

For a used or surplus NI NI-9505, verify:

  • Complete model: NI-9505
  • Module assembly/part number and revision
  • CompactRIO chassis/controller compatibility
  • Motor nominal voltage and maximum current
  • Standard terminal versus NI-9931
  • Encoder type and wiring
  • FPGA/LabVIEW application compatibility
  • Motor-cable and power-supply arrangement
  • Regenerative energy during deceleration

Do not accept a substitute solely because it fits the same C Series slot. The NI-9505 combines power switching, current measurement, and encoder acquisition, so a conventional analog-output or digital-output C Series module cannot reproduce its function.
