SHINKAWA VM-5H3 Product Description
Product Overview
SHINKAWA VM-5H3 is a dedicated instrument rack for the VM-5 Series rotating machinery monitoring system, providing the mechanical mounting, power distribution, system-status interface and external signal connections required to integrate multiple VM-5 monitoring units into a centralized machinery protection cabinet. According to SHINKAWA’s official specification, the VM-5H3 accommodates one power-supply unit and up to eight VM-5 monitor units under the standard configuration.
The SHINKAWA VM-5H3 is designed for turbine supervisory instrumentation and other critical rotating-equipment applications. It provides common System-OK alarm contacts, operation inputs, serial-interface connectors and a front-panel Power Supply OK indication. When equipped with the VM-5Z0 power-supply backup module, the maximum number of monitor units is reduced to six. The VM-5H3 therefore serves as the central hardware platform connecting VM-5 vibration, eccentricity, thrust, phase-marker and other monitoring modules with the plant DCS, PLC or machinery protection system.

SHINKAWA specifies that the VM-5H3 has a maximum capacity of eight monitoring units with one power supply, while installation of the VM-5Z0 backup module reduces the maximum monitor capacity to six. The rack’s System-OK contact is rated for resistive loads up to 250 VAC/5 A or 30 VDC/5 A.
Main Features and Advantages
High-Density VM-5 Monitoring Integration
The VM-5H3 provides a centralized rack platform for multiple VM-5 monitoring functions. Up to eight monitor units can be installed in the standard configuration, allowing a single rack to combine vibration, thrust, eccentricity, phase-marker, speed and other machinery measurements according to the monitored machine’s requirements.
Integrated Power Distribution
The rack accommodates one dedicated VM-5 power-supply unit, simplifying distribution of operating power to the installed monitoring modules. This eliminates the need for individual external power arrangements for each monitoring channel and creates a consistent architecture for machinery-monitoring cabinets.

VM-5H3
Centralized System-OK Monitoring
A major advantage of SHINKAWA VM-5H3 is its common System-OK alarm interface. The rack can provide a dry-contact signal representing the overall health of the monitoring system, allowing a DCS, PLC, annunciator or protection system to recognize an instrumentation fault independently of actual machinery conditions.
External Operation Interfaces
The rear-panel operation inputs support Filter Enable, Alarm Reset and Sequence functions through dry contacts. This provides straightforward integration with external control logic and allows plant-level systems to perform required monitoring-system operations without modifying the individual monitor modules.
Serial Communication Interface
The rack incorporates two D-Sub 9-pin connectors for serial interface input/output. This provides a dedicated connection path for compatible VM-5 system communication and supports integration of the monitoring architecture with associated equipment.
Suitable for Critical Rotating Machinery
The VM-5H3 is not itself a vibration sensor or measurement channel; rather, it provides the infrastructure that keeps multiple measurement modules organized and interconnected. This modular approach is particularly advantageous for turbines and compressor trains because the monitoring configuration can be built around the actual protection requirements of the machine.
Maintenance-Friendly Modular Architecture
Individual VM-5 monitor units can be installed or serviced within the rack without redesigning the entire machinery-monitoring architecture. Existing industrial references show VM-5H3 racks configured with combinations such as VM-5K dual vibration, VM-5T dual thrust and VM-5S/VM-5 communication modules, demonstrating the rack’s role as a common platform for multiple monitoring functions.
Application Fields
SHINKAWA VM-5H3 is primarily applied in turbine supervisory instrumentation (TSI), rotating machinery condition monitoring and machinery protection systems. It is particularly suitable for installations where several mechanical parameters must be monitored from one centralized rack.
In thermal power plants, VM-5H3 can house monitoring modules for steam-turbine vibration, thrust position, shaft eccentricity, phase marker and related parameters. The common System-OK output allows the turbine control or DCS system to recognize an instrumentation-system fault and distinguish it from an actual machine alarm.
In gas-turbine and combined-cycle plants, the rack can consolidate monitoring functions for turbine-generator trains and auxiliary rotating equipment. Its modular capacity makes it possible to configure the monitoring rack according to the number and type of critical measurements required by the machine.
In oil and gas and petrochemical facilities, the VM-5H3 is suitable for compressor trains, turbine-driven compressors, pumps and other high-value rotating equipment. Multiple monitoring modules can be combined in one rack, reducing cabinet complexity while providing centralized alarm and status interfaces.
In chemical processing, metallurgy, marine propulsion and heavy industrial machinery, the rack can support long-term condition-monitoring installations where reliable vibration and shaft-position information is required. The 0–65°C operating range and 20–95% non-condensing humidity specification make it appropriate for controlled industrial instrument cabinets.
