Product Introduction

The Kollmorgen SERVOSTAR 310 is a digital servo amplifier in the S300 family, intended for controlled operation of synchronous servo motors as well as other supported motor types. The 310 is the highest-current model in the 110–230 VAC portion of the standard range, providing 10 A RMS continuous output and 20 A RMS peak output.

The drive includes an onboard position controller, CANopen, RS232, pulse/direction capability, two analog inputs, multi-feedback support, and an onboard STO/restart-lock function. Expansion cards can add interfaces such as DeviceNet, PROFIBUS, SERCOS, EtherCAT, SynqNet, or additional I/O, depending on the exact hardware configuration.

Application Scenarios & Field Pitfalls — Engineer’s Perspective

Engineering Pain Point

With an older SERVOSTAR 310 installation, the word “310” is not enough to identify the exact drive configuration. The nameplate order code determines the voltage class, safety option, expansion interface, and other hardware details.

Typical Applications

  • CNC and machine-tool axis control
  • Packaging and automated machinery
  • Servo-driven positioning systems
  • Material-handling equipment
  • Industrial production machinery requiring closed-loop motion control

Technical Pitfalls to Avoid

  1. Verify the complete order code.
The standard SERVOSTAR 310 is S31061-NA, while S31061-EC adds EtherCAT and S31061-FN specifies the controlled-fan option. These should not be treated as identical hardware during replacement.
  2. Do not confuse S310 with the higher-voltage models.
SERVOSTAR 303/306/310 belong to the 110–230 VAC class. SERVOSTAR 341/343/346 belong to the 208–480 VAC class and use different voltage coding.
  3. Check the motor feedback before commissioning.
The supports multiple feedback technologies, but the actual motor, encoder/resolver configuration, and drive parameters must match. A replacement drive that powers up correctly can still fail during enable or commutation if feedback configuration is wrong.
  4. Check the DC-bus arrangement when multiple drives are linked.
Kollmorgen specifically warns that drives connected through the DC bus must have the same mains supply voltage. Incorrect DC-bus combinations can damage the servo amplifiers.

Kollmorgen’s order-code documentation explicitly distinguishes these SERVOSTAR 310 configurations, so the suffix should be included in procurement records whenever possible.

Procurement Check

For a replacement, specify SERVOSTAR 310 plus the complete nameplate order code, rather than ordering “S310” alone. At minimum, compare the input-voltage class, output-current rating, expansion interface, safety option, feedback type, motor parameters, and firmware/hardware revision.

The standard base configuration is S31061-NA. If the existing unit has an EC, FN, DeviceNet, PROFIBUS, SERCOS, SynqNet, or I/O expansion, that configuration needs to be preserved or deliberately engineered around.

Field replacement rule: verify the complete drive nameplate and motor/feedback combination before energizing the replacement. For an older machine, the existing parameter file can be just as important as the amplifier itself.
