Johnson Controls identifies the NAE55 base hardware as having two RS-232-C ports, two USB serial ports, two RS-485 ports, one Ethernet port, and an MS-BAT1010-0 data-protection battery. The MS-NAE5510-1 specifically provides the N2/BACnet MS/TP trunk configuration described above.

Product Introduction

The Johnson Controls MS-NAE5510-1 is a supervisory controller within the Metasys building automation architecture. Rather than functioning as a conventional PLC I/O controller, the NAE55 manages communications, scheduling, supervisory logic, alarms, trends, and coordination between connected building automation devices.

Its main field-network distinction is important during replacement work. The MS-NAE5510-1 can operate with two N2 trunks, two BACnet MS/TP trunks, or one N2 and one BACnet MS/TP trunk, making the exact trunk configuration part of the commissioning assessment.

Application Scenarios & Field Pitfalls — Engineer’s Perspective

Engineering Pain Point

A replacement NAE is not simply a matter of matching the enclosure and connector layout. The existing Metasys site registration, software release, database configuration, trunk assignments, and connected controllers all have to be considered before putting a replacement engine online.

Typical Applications

  • HVAC supervisory control — Coordinates air-handling units, chillers, boilers, pumps, terminal equipment, and related controllers.
  • Metasys N2 networks — Provides supervisory access to legacy Johnson Controls N2 field controllers.
  • BACnet MS/TP networks — Interfaces with compatible BACnet field controllers and devices over RS-485.
  • Mixed legacy/modern BAS installations — One trunk can be N2 while the other uses BACnet MS/TP, subject to the site configuration.

Technical Pitfalls to Avoid

  1. Do not confuse the MS-NAE5510-1 with an -1U. The -1U version is a specific UL-listed smoke-control variant. Johnson Controls separately identifies the two models in its ordering information.
  2. Do not assume every NAE55 firmware release is interchangeable. Current Johnson Controls documentation covers later NAE55 generations and software releases, whilS- belongs to an earlier hardware generation. Check the installed release and upgrade path before purchasing a replacement.
  3. Site registration matters after replacement. Johnson Controls explicitly states that replacing or adding an NAE requires updating the site registration so the new engine is recognized and can communicate with the Metasys site.
  4. Check the battery condition. The uses an MS-BAT1010-0 data-protection battery. A replacement unit that has spent years in storage should not be commissioned without checking battery condition and retained configuration.
  5. Verify the actual trunk protocol before ordering. A site may contain N2, BACnet MS/TP, or a mixed arrangement. The physical RS-485 interface alone does not tell you which protocol is configured.

Procurement Note

For an replacement, record the existing Metasys software release, trunk protocol, controller count, site registration, database backup, and full product suffix before approving the unit. A visually identical with a different suffix or application certification is not automatically an acceptable replacement.

⚠️ Legacy model: current Johnson Controls documentation focuses on newer hardware generations, S- appears in legacy ordering and repair documentation. Treat firmware and replacement compatibility as an engineering verification item rather than assuming current software support.
