Product Introduction
The IP-QUADRATURE is a single-wide IndustryPack module designed to connect incremental quadrature encoders to an embedded control computer. Four independent channels decode the phase relationship between encoder signals and maintain 24-bit position counts. Each channel can also be configured as a general-purpose up/down counter.
The input architecture supports both differential RS-422 and single-ended TTL/CMOS signals. The module also provides programmable polarity, termination, prescaling, capture/match functions, and interrupts, making it considerably more capable than a conventional digital-input IndustryPack.

IP-QUADRATURE
Application Scenarios & Field Pitfalls — Engineer’s Perspective
Engineering Pain Point
The IP-QUADRATURE is an encoder interface/decoder, not the encoder itself. The external sensor supplies the quadrature signals; the IndustryPack performs decoding, counting, capture, and host-side data exchange.
Typical Applications
- Rotary encoder position feedback
- Linear encoder measurement
- Motor shaft position monitoring
- Machine-axis motion feedback
- Embedded motion-control systems
- High-speed pulse and up/down counting
Technical Pitfalls to Avoid
- Do not substitute it with ordinary digital I/O.
A conventional digital-input module may detect encoder transitions but does not necessarily provide hardware quadrature decoding, 24-bit counting, capture, and programmable count modes. - Verify RS-422 versus TTL/CMOS wiring.
The IP-QUADRATURE supports both differential and single-ended signaling. For electrically noisy or longer encoder connections, the differential interface is the more appropriate configuration. - Do not apply the 10 MHz specification to every quadrature mode.
The documentation distinguishes the DC–10 MHz general-purpose counter rate from the DC–1.2 MHz standard quadrature rate. Higher quadrature rates depend on the selected X1/X2 operating mode. - Confirm the IndustryPack carrier.
This is a mezzanine-style IndustryPack module, not a standalone PCI or VME controller. The carrier provides the connection between the IP module and the host system.

Procurement Check
For an IP-QUADRATURE replacement, verify the complete board marking, hardware revision, IndustryPack carrier, encoder signal type, channel wiring, and host software/driver.
The model has passed through several corporate product generations—GreenSpring, SBS Technologies, and later Abaco Systems—so older hardware may carry different manufacturer markings or internal part-number references. The documented function remains the same: four-channel quadrature decoding on a single-wide IndustryPack.
Abaco currently classifies IP-QUADRATURE as a legacy product in Restricted Production Phase, so revision matching is important when replacing hardware in an existing embedded control system.
Procurement rule: do not approve a substitute merely because it has four encoder inputs. Match the IndustryPack form factor, four-channel architecture, 24-bit counting, input electrical standard, counting mode, and host-side software compatibility.
