Product Introduction

Woodward 5466-318 Product Introduction

The Woodward 5466-318 is the MicroNet TMR Kernel Power Supply Module used to power one kernel section of a MicroNet TMR control system. It receives 24 VDC from the main MicroNet power supply and regulates it to 5 VDC for the CPU and other modules within that kernel. It also generates the 5 VDC precharge voltage used during system startup.

This is a kernel-level power module, not the main cabinet power supply. Three kernel power supplies are used in a TMR system, one for each redundant kernel. The 5466-318 is specifically required with the TMR040 CPU; systems using the TMR5200 require 5466-1049 instead.

Application Scenarios & Field Pitfalls

Engineering Pain Point

A MicroNet TMR system can remain operational after one kernel develops a power fault, which can make this module easy to overlook during troubleshooting. But a deteriorating kernel supply can produce misleading symptoms—CPU resets, module communication faults, or loss of one redundancy channel. Check the kernel power LED and 5 VDC rail before replacing the CPU.

Typical Applications

  • Gas Turbine Control — Powering individual redundant MicroNet TMR control kernels.
  • Steam Turbine Control — Kernel-level power distribution for turbine control processors and I/O.
  • Power Generation — TMR control systems where independent kernel power supplies support fault tolerance.
  • Industrial Turbomachinery — Legacy MicroNet TMR installations using the TMR040 CPU architecture.

Technical Pitfalls to Avoid

  1. Do not use 5466-318 with a TMR5200 CPU.
Woodward explicitly specifies 5466-318 for TMR040 and 5466-1049 for TMR5200. The two kernel power supplies should not be treated as interchangeable.
  2. Install it in the correct kernel position.
The kernel power supply belongs in the first slot of each kernel section. The CPU occupies the following slot. Incorrect positioning can prevent the kernel from powering or initializing correctly.
  3. Remove the kernel modules before replacing the power supply.
Woodward’s installation instruction specifically states that all modules in that kernel must be removed before installing or removing the Kernel Power Supply module. This is not a card to hot-swap casually.
  4. Check the 24 VDC input under load.
A bad upstream MicroNet power supply can produce symptoms identical to a failed 5466-318. Measure the actual input at the kernel supply rather than relying only on the cabinet supply indication.
  5. Do not judge the module only by the LED.
The LED provides a useful health indication, but a proper diagnosis should also verify the 5 VDC kernel rail and downstream behavior. A marginal output can be more difficult to identify than a completely dead supply.

Related Products

  • Woodward 5466-1049 — MicroNet TMR Kernel Power Supply for the TMR5200 CPU. This is the key alternative to 5466-318 when migrating to the newer CPU architecture. It should not be selected simply because both modules are kernel power supplies.
  • Woodward TMR040 CPU — The CPU architecture specifically associated with the 5466-318. The kernel power supply and CPU must be matched as specified by the MicroNet TMR hardware configuration.
  • Woodward TMR5200 CPU — Newer MicroNet TMR CPU architecture requiring the 5466-1049 kernel power supply rather than 5466-318. This distinction matters during legacy-system upgrades.
  • Woodward MicroNet TMR Main Power Supply — Supplies the 24 VDC input distributed to the three kernel power supplies. A fault upstream can affect multiple kernels simultaneously.
  • Woodward 5466-257 — MicroNet TMR high-density analog I/O module. It resides in the same MicroNet TMR control platform but performs analog signal processing rather than kernel power conversion.
  • Woodward 5466-315 — MicroNet high-density analog I/O module. It is an I/O component, not a power-supply substitute, but may be installed within the same broader MicroNet architecture.
  • Woodward 5466-318 Kernel Power Supply, Kernel B/C — The same 5466-318 part number is used for each kernel section. A complete TMR system therefore normally has one module serving each of the A, B, and C kernel sections.
  • MicroNet TMR Chassis — Provides the physical and electrical backplane infrastructure for the kernel power supply, CPU, and associated I/O modules.
