Main Features and Advantages

16 Independent Analog Outputs

The RAO02 provides 16 individually configurable analog output channels. Each channel can be programmed for either current or voltage output according to the requirements of the connected field device.

Redundant I/O Architecture

As a redundant analog output module, RAO02 is intended for applications where continued availability of control outputs is important. This makes it particularly appropriate for critical process and turbine-control applications.

RAO02

4–20 mA and 1–5 VDC

Each output can independently support:

  • 4–20 mA
  • 1–5 VDC

This provides compatibility with a broad range of industrial actuators, positioners, controllers and other analog field equipment.

HART v5.4 Support

In current-output mode, the RAO02 supports HART v5.4 instruments and can provide access to secondary HART variables. ABB specifies support for up to 24 secondary variables in total, with up to four secondary variables per channel.

High Accuracy and Resolution

The module uses a dedicated 12-bit D/A converter for each output channel and provides accuracy of approximately ±0.1% of full-scale range. This supports stable analog control in process applications.

Electrical Isolation

The outputs are group isolated, with ABB specifying 1500 V isolation between the field signal and logic and between the channel groups. This helps reduce the impact of electrical disturbances and ground-potential differences in industrial installations.

Short-Circuit and Open-Circuit Protection

In current mode, the RAO02 provides output protection by limiting current and can detect an open circuit in less than five seconds.

System Integration

The RAO02 is part of ABB’s Symphony Plus SD Series I/O architecture. ABB specifies compatibility with HBR01-EPD and VBR01-EPD mounting bases.

The controller uses:

  • Function Code 221 — I/O Device Definition
  • Function Code 223 — Analog Output Channel configuration

These functions configure the module and individual analog-output channels, including engineering units, alarm limits and default output behavior following loss of controller communication.

Application Fields

Power Generation

RAO02 is well suited to power plants and turbine-control systems, where redundant analog control signals are required for valves, actuators, governors and other equipment.

Process Automation

The module can generate analog control signals for flow, pressure, temperature and level control loops in continuous-process applications.

Oil & Gas and Petrochemical

The combination of 16 analog channels, HART support and redundancy makes RAO02 suitable for critical process-control installations in refineries and petrochemical facilities.

Chemical Industry

The isolated analog outputs can interface with control valves, positioners and other field instruments in chemical processing systems.

Water and Utilities

RAO02 can support analog control of pumps, valves, drives and other equipment in water-treatment and utility applications.
