Product Introduction
The ABB DI581-S is a safety digital input module in the AC500-S S500 safety I/O family, designed to process 24 VDC safety signals in applications requiring certified safety control. It provides 16 safety digital input channels, with the channel configuration supporting up to SIL 2 operation across all 16 inputs or up to SIL 3 operation using 8 inputs, depending on the safety configuration. The module also provides eight phase-shifted test pulse outputs for sensor and circuit monitoring.
The ABB DI581-S can operate locally with AC500-S CPUs or as a remote safety I/O module through compatible PROFINET/PROFIsafe infrastructure. ABB documentation identifies applications including emergency-stop circuits, guard monitoring, and other safety-related discrete signals. Built-in startup and runtime diagnostics cover functions such as CPU/RAM checks, program-flow monitoring, cross-talk detection, and stuck-at fault testing.

Application Scenarios & Field Pitfalls — Engineer’s Perspective
The DI581-S is most useful where conventional 24 VDC digital inputs are insufficient because the input signal itself forms part of a functional-safety circuit. Typical applications include emergency-stop devices, machine guard switches, safety interlocks, light curtains, zone monitoring, and other discrete safety sensors. The module supports one-channel, two-channel equivalent, and two-channel antivalent configurations, allowing the safety application to be designed around the required fault-detection strategy.
A few points deserve attention during replacement or retrofit:
- Do not treat as a standard S500 digital input module. Its configuration, diagnostics, PROFIsafe addressing, and safety parameters must match the AC500-S safety application.
- SIL level depends on the actual channel configuration and safety architecture. Having a SIL 3-capable module does not automatically make the complete machine or safety function SIL 3.
- Terminal unit compatibility matters. ABB documentation shows the installed on the TU582-S terminal unit.
- Input delay affects safety response. The delay is configurable from 1 to 500 ms, so replacing a module without checking the existing safety parameters can change the response time of the safety function.
- PROFIsafe configuration must be preserved. The module uses rotary switches for its PROFIsafe address, and the configured safety parameters need to agree with the safety project.
For a field replacement, I would verify the complete ordering code, terminal unit, AC500-S CPU/PROFINET interface, PROFIsafe address, safety project configuration, firmware/revision, and validated safety response time before putting the machine back into service.
