Description

ABB RAI02J Product Description

Product Overview

ABB RAI02J is a Redundant Analog Input Module for the ABB Ability™ Symphony® Plus SD Series I/O architecture. It provides 16 independently configurable analog input channels for high-level field signals, with support for 4–20 mA or 1–5 VDC signals and HART v5.4 communication.

The RAI02J is designed for high-availability process-control applications where reliable acquisition of transmitter and instrumentation signals is required. ABB’s official RAI02 documentation identifies the RAI02 as a 16-channel redundant analog input module within the SD Series I/O platform.

Main Features and Advantages

16-Channel Analog Acquisition

The RAI02J accepts up to 16 analog field signals. Each channel can independently be configured for either 4–20 mA or 1–5 VDC, allowing connection to a wide range of industrial transmitters and sensors.

Redundant Architecture

As a redundant I/O module, RAI02J is intended for applications where high system availability and reliable signal acquisition are important. It is particularly suitable for critical process-control loops and continuous-operation plants.

RAI02J

HART Communication

The module supports HART v5.4 instruments. ABB specifies up to 24 secondary HART variables, with up to four secondary variables available from an individual channel. This allows additional transmitter information and diagnostics to be accessed by the control system.

High-Resolution A/D Conversion

RAI02J provides configurable 12–16 bit A/D resolution, enabling accurate conversion of analog transmitter signals into digital process values. The complete 16-channel module can update within approximately 100 ms.

Electrical Isolation

The analog inputs are group isolated, with ABB specifying 1500 V isolation between field signals and logic. This helps protect control electronics from ground-potential differences and electrical interference in industrial environments.

Signal Protection

In current mode, the module incorporates short-circuit protection and limits current to a maximum of approximately 96 mA per channel. It can also detect an open circuit in less than five seconds.

Application Fields

Power Generation

RAI02J can acquire signals from pressure, temperature, flow and level transmitters used in boiler, turbine and auxiliary systems. Redundant analog acquisition is particularly valuable in critical turbine and plant-control applications.

Oil & Gas

The module can interface with field transmitters measuring process pressure, flow, level and temperature in refinery and oil-and-gas control systems.

Chemical Processing

Its 16-channel architecture and HART functionality make it suitable for collecting process measurements from distributed instrumentation in continuous chemical processes.

Water & Wastewater

RAI02J can acquire transmitter signals from pumps, tanks, pipelines and treatment processes, allowing process values to be transferred to the Symphony Plus DCS.

Industrial Automation

The module is appropriate for high-availability automation systems where multiple 4–20 mA or 1–5 VDC field instruments must be integrated into an ABB DCS.

System Integration

RAI02J belongs to ABB’s Symphony Plus SD Series I/O platform. ABB describes SD Series I/O as a flexible, modular I/O architecture covering analog, HART, digital and turbine-specific modules.

The module configuration uses:

  • FC 221 — I/O Device Definition
  • FC 222 — Analog Input Channel

FC 222 is used to configure individual channels, including engineering units and high/low alarm limits.
