Product Introduction

The ICS Triplex T8300 is the Trusted TMR Expander Chassis, used to extend the I/O capacity of a Trusted safety-control installation. It provides the chassis-level infrastructure in which the expander processor and I/O hardware are installed. The chassis itself is not the processor or an individual I/O module.

A typical expansion assembly uses the T8300 chassis together with T8310 Expander Processor modules, T8311 Expander Interface hardware, and the appropriate Trusted I/O modules. This arrangement allows remote or distributed I/O assemblies to remain connected to the Trusted controller architecture while maintaining the system’s fault-tolerant design.

Applications & Field Pitfalls — Engineer’s Perspective

The biggest procurement mistake with is confusing the chassis number with the processor number. Rockwell’s documentation clearly separates , T8310, and T8311: is the chassis, T8310 is the Expander Processor, and T8311 is the Expander Interface. A listing that calls a “TMR Expander Processor” is therefore using the wrong product designation.

Typical Application Areas

  • Safety instrumented systems — expansion of Trusted TMR I/O for safety-critical control.
  • Emergency shutdown systems — distributed I/O architecture for ESD applications.
  • Turbine control — expansion chassis for turbine monitoring and protection I/O.
  • Fire and gas systems — distributed Trusted I/O installations.
  • Large process plants — remote I/O expansion where field signals are distributed across multiple chassis.

Field Pitfalls

  1. is not a processor module. The actual expander processor is T8310.
  2. Check the chassis address before commissioning. Trusted documentation identifies chassis addressing as part of installation/configuration.
  3. Verify the complete chassis population. The chassis, T8310 processor, T8311 interface, I/O modules, termination assemblies, and associated cables form a system-level combination.
  4. Check the 24 VDC supply architecture. The documented supply range is 20–32 VDC, with a 20 A external fuse advised. Do not assume a generic 24 VDC rack supply is automatically suitable.
  5. Do not substitute T8300C without checking the exact system documentation. The Trusted product family includes revised/conformal-coated variants, and the complete installed configuration should determine the replacement.
  6. Inspect the backplane and module connectors. For a used chassis, bent or damaged connector pins can create intermittent faults that are easily mistaken for a processor or I/O problem.

Procurement Note

Specify the item as:

ICS Triplex — Trusted TMR Expander Chassis

Do not describe it simply as a “ processor.” For a complete replacement, verify the chassis marking, revision, physical connector condition, chassis address, power arrangement, and the installed configuration.

The distinction is particularly important when purchasing legacy Trusted hardware. = Expander Chassis; = Expander Processor; = Expander Interface. Rockwell Automation’s current documentation maintains this separation.

For a used or surplus chassis, inspection should include the rear connectors, backplane, mounting hardware, chassis address configuration, and any signs of corrosion or mechanical damage. A visually clean chassis is not sufficient evidence that the backplane and power distribution paths are serviceable.
