Description

The product Hydran S2 refers to an online monitoring system designed for power transformers, originally developed and manufactured by GE (General Electric).

Product Overview

  • Manufacturer: GE (General Electric / GE Grid Solutions / Energy)

  • Part Number / Model: Hydran S2

  • Component Type: Online Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) and Moisture Monitoring System

  • Platform: Substation Asset Condition Monitoring (Smart Grid Solutions)

Key Specifications & Features

  • Sensing Technology: Utilizes a proven membrane-based composite gas-sensing technology that acts as an early-warning system (“smoke detector”) for the overall concentration of combustible fault gases.

  • Monitoring Parameters:

    • Composite Fault Gases: Measures cumulative levels of gases such as Hydrogen ($H_2$), Carbon Monoxide ($CO$), Acetylene ($C_2H_2$), and Ethylene ($C_2H_4$) resulting from internal electrical or thermal faults.

    • Moisture: Tracks water content in transformer insulating oil.

  • Communication Interfaces:

    • RS-485 serial connection utilizing Modbus protocol.

    • Hardwired 4–20 mA analog outputs.

    • Programmable alarm relay contacts for local warning integration.

  • Physical Enclosure: Ruggedized IP66 (NEMA 4X) rated housing designed to withstand harsh outdoor substation environments and wide ambient temperature swings.

Industrial Deployment

  • Applications: Widely installed on medium-to-large high-voltage power transformers, autotransformers, and on-load tap changers (OLTC) in electrical substations and power generation facilities to prevent catastrophic failures and unplanned outages through continuous real-time health tracking.

Product Overview

HYDRAN S2 is an on-line Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) monitor manufactured by GE Vernova (formerly Morgan Schaffer). It is the early-generation single-valve direct-mounted transformer fault gas monitoring unit adopting fuel cell sensor technology. The device relies on natural convection of insulating oil for sampling without built-in oil pumps or moving mechanical parts, delivering continuous real-time tracking of dissolved fault gases in transformer oil. It provides early warning of internal insulation deterioration, hot spots and arc faults for oil-immersed transformers and shunt reactors. This model has been officially discontinued and succeeded by Hydran 201Ti, Hydran M2 / M2-X series.

  • Two optional sensor configurations to match different asset importance: composite gas sensor for main transformers; hydrogen-only sensor for auxiliary transformers and reactors
  • Fuel cell sensor without consumable carrier gas, low routine maintenance workload
  • No internal moving parts, effectively lowering failure risks under long-term continuous operation
  • Single valve direct mounting design, simple installation, generally without transformer outage required
  • Built-in calculation algorithm outputs composite gas index, facilitating staff to judge fault severity trend
  • Multi-level adjustable alarm thresholds to avoid false alarms caused by load fluctuation
  • Supports connection with DCS, SCADA via 4–20mA analog signals for remote monitoring
  • Industrial sealed housing adapts to outdoor substation and power plant cabinet environments
  • Strict full model verification required; sensor type variants cannot be directly interchanged without calibration
  • Widely used for maintenance spare replacement of legacy Hydran series transformer monitoring systems

Application Scope

Thermal power plant main transformer and auxiliary transformer condition monitoring, substation oil-immersed reactor insulation monitoring, wind farm booster transformer fault early warning, water treatment plant power transformation equipment, and retrofit maintenance projects of legacy Hydran S2 monitoring systems.
