Honeywell identifies the CC-PUIO31 as a Universal Input Output module. Each channel can be configured according to the required I/O function, rather than requiring separate dedicated modules for every signal type.
The module has 32 configurable channels. That makes the wiring and engineering architecture quite different from conventional fixed-function Series C I/O modules.
Product Introduction
Honeywell CC-PUIO31
The Honeywell CC-PUIO31 is a 32-channel Universal I/O module for the Experion PKS Series C architecture. It interfaces analog and digital field devices and allows individual channels to be configured as AI, AO, DI, or DO, with pulse-input capability on any four channels. HART 7 support is also provided for applicable analog I/O functions.
For plant engineering teams, the main advantage is channel flexibility. A single module can handle mixed signal requirements without forcing every cabinet position into one fixed I/O function. That can simplify spare management and cabinet design, but only when the channel configuration and associated IOTA are properly documented.

Application Scenarios & Field Pitfalls
Engineering Pain Point
A conventional DCS cabinet often ends up with half-used I/O modules: one card for analog inputs, another for analog outputs, another for digital signals. Then the process changes and the original allocation no longer matches the field wiring. The CC-PUIO31 addresses that problem by allowing its 32 channels to be configured for different signal functions. The tradeoff is straightforward: flexibility increases the importance of configuration records and channel-level verification.
Typical Applications
- Oil & Gas — Mixed analog and digital process signals in compressor, pump, and utility control systems.
- Petrochemical — Temperature, pressure, flow, valve-position, status, and command signals within Experion PKS control cabinets.
- Power Generation — Mixed turbine auxiliary and balance-of-plant I/O where channel utilization changes during plant modifications.
- Process Manufacturing — Brownfield DCS upgrades where existing Series C infrastructure must accommodate changing field-device requirements.
Technical Pitfalls to Avoid
- Do not treat all 32 channels as automatically interchangeable.
Honeywell provides channel-level configuration options, but the actual electrical behavior depends on the selected I/O function and installation configuration. Check the engineering database and wiring drawings before moving a field signal. - Verify the IOTA.
The CC-PUIO31 is associated with CC-TUIO31 for non-redundant installations and CC-TUIO41 for redundant installations. The IOTA is part of the field-wiring interface; it is not just a mechanical mounting accessory. - Do not overlook firmware compatibility.
Series C modules introduced with later Experion releases may have minimum firmware requirements. Honeywell’s Series C documentation specifically notes that modules introduced in Experion R410 must be used with R410 or later and cannot simply be downgraded to an earlier firmware environment. Verify the installed Experion release before replacement. - Check HART assumptions.
HART 7 support is available for analog I/O, but that does not mean every connected transmitter will automatically provide the same diagnostic behavior. Confirm the field instrument, loop wiring, HART configuration, and channel assignment. - Treat SOE wiring as a timing application.
The module supports DISOE with 1 ms resolution and a 20 ms PV scan. If the application depends on event sequencing, confirm that the actual channel configuration and controller engineering meet the required event-capture behavior. - Do not assume hazardous-area suitability from the module number alone.
Honeywell’s installation documentation specifies particular field-wiring parameters and approved combinations involving the IOTA and related hardware. For Zone 2 or Division 2 service, use the exact approved installation arrangement rather than relying on the module’s standalone specification.
Related Products
- Honeywell CC-PUIO01 — Earlier Series C Universal I/O module with the same 32-channel UIO concept. It is closely related to CC-, but the exact system revision and module-generation requirements should be checked before substitution.
- Honeywell CC-TUIO31 — Non-redundant IOTA for the CC-. It provides the field termination interface for a standard, non-redundant installation and is the appropriate companion when the application does not require redundant UIO modules.
- Honeywell CC-TUIO41 — Redundant IOTA for the CC-. Used where the UIO architecture requires redundant module installation. Its physical arrangement differs from the 9-inch non-redundant CC-TUIO31.
- Honeywell CC-PCNT02 — C300 Controller. This is the controller platform associated with the Series C architecture and provides the control-processing side of the I/O system. The CC- is an I/O component, not a controller replacement.
- Honeywell CC-PAIH02 — Series C High-Level Analog Input/HART module. Unlike the universal CC-, this is a dedicated analog-input solution and may be preferable where the application has a large number of fixed analog measurement points.
- Honeywell CC-PAOX01 — Series C Analog Output module. It provides dedicated analog-output functionality rather than the mixed-channel flexibility of the CC-.
- Honeywell CC-PDIL01 — Series C Digital Input module. This is suited to applications with predominantly fixed digital-input requirements, whereas CC- is intended for configurable mixed I/O.
- Honeywell CC-PDOB01 — Series C Digital Output module. It provides dedicated digital-output functionality and is a different engineering choice from a universal I/O card.
- Honeywell CC-PPIX01 — Series C Pulse Input Module. Used when pulse-input density is the main requirement. The CC- can accommodate pulse input on any four channels, so a dedicated pulse module may be more appropriate when significantly more pulse channels are needed.
Procurement note: The CC- is a 32-channel Series C Universal I/O module, not a generic 16-channel analog/digital card. Before ordering a replacement, verify the installed IOTA (CC-TUIO31 or CC-TUIO41), Experion release, module revision, channel-by-channel configuration, redundancy arrangement, and hazardous-area installation requirements. Those details determine whether a nominally identical CC- is actually suitable for the cabinet in question.
